Cross Stitch
Cross stitch is a special type of embroidery which utilises cross shaped stitches to create patterns or images. Cross stitch is very popular across the world, but it enjoys an exceptional high level of popularity in Eastern European countries such as the Ukraine where it is one of their many traditional handicrafts. Traditional examples of cross stitch embroidery are usually made up of simple patterns. Sometimes a reoccurring floral motif is used. Modern practitioners of cross stitch favour using the technique to create images rather than simple patterns, some of which can be extremely elaborate. A person who is very skilled at cross stitch embroidery may be capable of creating an extremely detailed image which incorporates shading and perspective much like a realist painting.
Traditionally items decorated with cross stitch would have made use of simple coloured wools or cotton. However there are many more fabrics readily available today and modern pieces decorated with cross stitch embroidery may utilise a variety of different threads. Metallic threads and thicker threads can be used to create highlights and textured patterns. There is virtually no limit for the possibilities of cross stitch and extremely detailed and large pieces can be created with time and patience. People who are highly skilled at cross stitch are only ever limited by their scope.
